How to Trim a YouTube Video: 3 Ways That Work
Trim a YouTube video with Clips (5 to 60 seconds, shared as a link), the Studio editor for your own uploads, or download only the part you need as an MP4.

You want one part of a YouTube video: a two-minute answer inside a 90-minute podcast, or the 20 seconds a client asked for. There are three ways to get it. Which one is right depends on two questions: is the video yours, and do you need a file or only a link?
Key takeaways
- YouTube Clips gives you a shareable link to a 5 to 60 second section of most public videos (YouTube Help).
- YouTube Studio trims your own uploads in place, for videos shorter than six hours (YouTube Help).
- To get the section as an MP4 file you can edit, you need a tool that downloads and cuts it.
| Method | Whose video | What you get | Length limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Clips | Most public videos | A link that loops on YouTube | 5 to 60 seconds |
| YouTube Studio editor | Your own uploads | The edited upload, same URL | Videos under 6 hours |
| Download a clip | Any public video | An MP4 file | Any section you choose |
How do you clip someone else's YouTube video?
Use YouTube Clips when a link is enough. YouTube's help page says clips "are between 5-60 seconds long" and play "on a loop from the original video's watch page" (YouTube Help). You pick the section with a slider under the video, give it a title, and copy the link.
A clip is a pointer, not a copy. That has three effects you should know about:
- It can disappear. YouTube removes the clip when the original video is deleted or set to private.
- The creator can block it. Channels can turn off the setting "Allow viewers to clip my content", and then the Clip button does not appear.
- Some live streams are out. You can't create clips from live streams that have no DVR.
Clips work well for sharing a moment in a chat or an email. They do not work when you need to put the section into a video editor, a slide deck, or a training course, because there is no file.
Trim your own upload in YouTube Studio
Open the video in YouTube Studio, click Editor, then Trim & cut. You can "cut out the beginning, middle, or end" of the video, and you "don't have to re-upload a video to trim it" (YouTube Help). The URL, views, and comments stay the same.
The editor has limits. It only works on videos shorter than six hours. And if your channel is not in the YouTube Partner Program, you may not be able to save changes to an unedited video with more than 100,000 views, except to blur faces. Check the edit before you save it: "As of June 2025, you are not able to undo changes made with YouTube Studio Editor after saving."
This is the right tool for removing a slow intro or a mistake from your own upload. It does not give you a separate file of the part you cut.
How do you download only part of a YouTube video?
You need a tool that downloads the video and cuts it. YouTube Premium does not cover this case: Premium downloads "are stored encrypted on the device and can only be watched in the YouTube app" (YouTube Help), and they play offline for up to 29 days. You can watch them on a plane, but you can't edit them.
With Vidtrimmer's clip downloader it takes five steps:
- Copy the video's link. Normal,
youtu.be, and Shorts links all work. - Paste it into Vidtrimmer and pick a quality, from 360p to 4K.
- Turn on Trim and enter the start and end times. You can type
90,1:30, or1:02:03. - Sign in with Google. New accounts get 1 free download, up to 720p, for videos up to 10 minutes.
- Click Download and save the MP4 when the job is done.
What happens on the server matters for quality. We download the full video, then cut it with FFmpeg on the exact frames you chose and re-encode the clip with H.264 at CRF 18. In CRF mode a lower number means higher quality, and libx264 uses 23 when you set nothing. We measured both on a 10-second 1080p clip: CRF 18 scored 50.9 dB PSNR against the source and came out at 6.1 MB, against 48.1 dB and 3.8 MB at the default. The lossless cut guide has the full test. You pay one credit only when the download succeeds.
If you already have the video as a file and want a cut with no re-encode at all, read how to cut video without losing quality. It explains keyframes and when a lossless cut is possible.
Is it legal to download part of a YouTube video?
It depends on the video and on what you do with it. YouTube's Terms of Service say you may not download content except "as expressly authorized by the Service" or "with prior written permission from YouTube and, if applicable, the respective rights holders" (YouTube Terms of Service, effective December 15, 2023).
Copyright is a separate question. In the US, fair use is decided case by case on four factors: the purpose of the use, the nature of the work, how much of the work you use, and the effect on the market for the original (U.S. Copyright Office). A short excerpt for commentary or teaching weighs differently than a full re-upload, but no rule makes a clip automatically safe.
For copyright, the lowest-risk cases are your own videos, videos under a license that allows reuse, and videos you have the creator's permission to use. YouTube's terms still apply to the download itself, so for anything else, ask the rights holder. This is general information, not legal advice.
Pick the method by the result you need
Each method fits one job:
- A link to share a moment: use YouTube Clips.
- Your own upload is too long: use the Studio editor.
- A file for an edit, a deck, or an archive: download the section as an MP4.
If you often need clips at volume, for example for a media monitoring or research team, the Vidtrimmer API takes a URL and start and end times and sends the finished MP4 to your webhook.
Questions
Can I trim a YouTube video without downloading it?
Yes. YouTube Clips lets you pick a 5 to 60 second section of most public videos and share it as a link. The clip plays on a loop from the original video's watch page, so you get a link, not a file you can edit.
What is the maximum length of a YouTube clip?
60 seconds. YouTube's help page says clips are between 5 and 60 seconds long. If you need a longer section, or you need the section as a file, download that part of the video as an MP4 instead.
Can I trim someone else's video in YouTube Studio?
No. The Studio editor only edits videos on your own channel. It can cut the beginning, middle, or end of an upload without a re-upload, for videos shorter than six hours.
Does trimming a YouTube video lower its quality?
It depends on the tool. Vidtrimmer cuts on the exact frame you choose and re-encodes the clip once with H.264 at CRF 18. In our test on a 1080p film clip, that scored 50.9 dB PSNR against the source, against 48.1 dB at the libx264 default of 23. Stream-copy tools skip the re-encode, but can only start at a keyframe.
Can I trim a private YouTube video?
Not with an online tool. A private video only plays for accounts the owner invited, so a server cannot open it. If it is your own private video, use the trim tool in YouTube Studio.
